JOSH PRADA
As an applied linguist and critical multilingualism research, I approach education and society as mutually constitutive politicized spaces. The main focus of my work is on the fields of mother tongue/heritage language and bilingual education. The focus of my research program is on the creation of classroom contexts where racialized, language-minoritized students can maximize the use of their communicative and experiential repertoires to optimize learning and personal growth. To that end, I work with students as well as with teachers, administrators and community partners to create high-impact pedagogical practices that harness research-based insights within transformative curricular efforts. My program of inquiry has pioneered the exploration of translanguaging in this context, particularly as it pertains to the late bilingual/heritage language in classroom in college, and in doing so has substantively added to translanguaging and translinguistics as an emerging field of research. Other connected issues I have researched in relation to heritage language education include multilingualism and emotions, curricular innovation, critical approaches, service learning and experiential learning, arts-based curricula, critical teacher education, and multiliteracies, among others.
Over the last three years, my agenda has grown to adopt a wider, global perspective, allowing for comparisons between ideological and curricular structures in different parts of the world. In doing so, my research has moved from the US Latinx experience, to incorporate Hispanic communities in Brazil, Japan and Germany, and Imazighen communities in Spain and Morocco.
Alongside this research, other interests include linguistic and semiotic landscapes; social cognition, imagination and memory; the relationship between meaning-making and the senses/sensing, and post-humanism and new materialisms in applied linguistics.
My work has appeared and is forthcoming in venues including Foreign Language Annals, The Handbook of Research in Heritage Language Education (Springer), El Español como Lengua de Herencia (Routledge), Classroom Discourse, The Heritage Language Journal, Language Teaching in the Linguistic Landscape (Springer), Outcomes of Spanish Heritage Language Programs (Georgetown University Press), Critical Language Awareness and Heritage Language Teaching (Routledge) and Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, among many others. Moreover, I am co-guest editor of the special issue "Translingual and Multilingual Pedagogies" (with Tarja Nikula, University of Javaskyla) which appeared in December 2018 in the EuroAmerican Journal of Applied Linguistics and Languages), and I am co-guest editor of two special issues (to appear in late 2022 with Li Wei, University College London) and two more special issues (to appear in 2023 and 2024) on heritage language bilingualism and emotions, both co-edited with Meagan Driver (Michigan State University).
