BACKGROUND

I am Assistant Professor of Spanish Applied Linguistics in the World Languages & Cultures Department at the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, where I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in applied language and linguistics, and direct the development and implementation of the new Spanish program for heritage speakers. My specialisms are in the broad and interdisciplinary field of bi-/multilingualism, with an emphasis on community/heritage languages, their speakers, and the multilingual practices that emerge in these contexts. 

Beyond my home department but still on campus, I am associate director of the Spanish Resource Center in Indianapolis (Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional del Gobierno de España), and I am the founder and convener of IUPUI's Applied Linguistics Network, an interest/research group working and engaging in collaborative work, discussion, and dissemination of language-related findings produced at Indiana University-Purdue University--Indianapolis. In Spring 2019, I founded SHLED-In (Spanish Heritage Language Education Day - Indianapolis), an annual workshop series open to language teachers and instructors at all levels seeking professional development opportunities in heritage language teaching and learning catering to the Indiana community.

I am Associate Editor of the Spanish as a Heritage Language Journal (University of Florida Press), Reviews Editor of the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism (Taylor&Francis), and editorial board member for two international journals: "Translation and Translanguaging in Multilingual Contexts" (John Benjamins) and "MODULEMA: a Scientific Journal on Cultural Diversity" (University of Granada Press); I also serve as reviewer for a number of national and international journals, books series, and professional meetings, including Applied Linguistics, the Hispanic Linguistics Symposium, the Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language, Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press), The Handbook of Spanish Language Teaching (Routledge), and the International Journal of Bilingualism.

I received my PhD in Hispanic linguistics (with concentrations in bilingualism, heritage language education, and second language acquisition) from Texas Tech University (USA) in Spring 2018. While completing my PhD studies, I was an instructor in the Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures Department. During those years I assisted in the creation and development of the Spanish Program for Heritage Speakers, which I coordinated under the directorship of Diego Pascual y Cabo (now at the University of Florida).  Also at Texas Tech, from Spring 2016 to Spring 2018, I was coordinator of the Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition Lab. Before Texas Tech,  I completed a MA in Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck, University of London (UK), and before that, a BA+MA degree in English language and linguistics at the University of Granada (Spain).
